New York

Got to JFK at 5:30am. Was able to deplane and get on the Air Train right away. Took a little over an hour to get to Tribeca where Peter Shapiro lives. Arrived on his doorstep right at 7am. Got caught up for a brief bit then took a nap while Peter continued his slumber.

Was up again around 10am and jumped on Peter's computer to try and get some communicating done on the Internet. Peter was up a couple of hours later and we continued to catch up. He had a 3pm physical therapy appointment and I took the opportunity to head over to B&H to round out my photo and video kit. Two hours and $4500 later I was on my way and feeling much better about my ability to properly document the coming expedition.

Peter's friend John Morton (who I had met back in August of 2003) came by and we chatted a bit before Peter got back. Shortly after John left it was time to get ready for a gig at EyeWash. Peter agreed to mix with me and put together his kit to do video feedback.

We got over to the Gallery space next to the Gershwin Hotel just before 8pm. Met Eric and Holly who put on the event. They had only had a few events in the Gallery space and things were a little rough getting set up. Was very surprised to see Bruce, his brother Paul and Sleepy Tom, all of whom I had met in Birmingham back in April when I attended AVIT UK 2005. They were a month into a two and a half month long tour of North America VJing for Def Leopard. Peter and I set up pretty quickly and messed around for a while before heading over to an Indian place around the corner. We picked one out at random. At first it seemed that we had made a big mistake as the wait staff did not seem to comprehend that we needed to get back to our show quickly. The cook redeemed the whole experience with some of the best Southern Indian food I have tasted. Peter had never had Dosa before and was suitably impressed.

With Peter Shapiro at EyeWash. Group shot clockwise from me: Peter, Bruce from Brighton (on tour with his brother Paul and Sleepy Tom to support Def Leopard), Eric (EyeWash), an unknown lady and Holly (EyeWash).

We got back from our fantastic meal to find things in complete disarray at the Gallery. The owners had kicked EyeWash out of the back room to make way for a Jazz Band and the gentleman who was supposed to go on first; another Peter (who writes for Keyboard magazine) was having trouble with his S-Video output. It seemed as if the last loop I had left playing was still being projected. Peter and I stepped up and did a short 30-minute set before we were asked to make way for the other Peter. He was using Neuromixer and the Mixman DM2 controller.

Talked a bit with Claire Barratt, who Peter was going to work with later in the summer and chatted with Bruce for a long while. Thought we were going to get going around midnight, but ended up talking with Sleepy Tom for an hour. Chatted about his impressions of touring with aging rockers, the grind of being on the road and the fans debasing themselves. Also talked a bit about the future of AVIT. I was very glad to have had the chance to speak with Sleepy Tom, as I didn't really talk with him in Birmingham.
Walked back to Peter's place and crashed after a little bit.
