Breakfast was a rather tense affair. Koby had gotten lost trying to make it home alone and Margaret had passed out somewhere close to the hotel and sprained her elbow quite badly. Wojciech was in state about people wandering around alone and insisted that we all take taxis at night in the future. Joanna had wandered around town to find a clinic to look at Margaret’s elbow. The doctor they found was a complete jerk and pooh-poohed Margaret’s concerns about having passed out. Joanna found another clinic to get an EKG done, as she was starting to feel like she was having some heart problems. She was relieved to get a clean bill of health.

Goofing around on the way to Teatr Kana.
After breakfast we jumped in a van and headed to a nearby town to visit Monar, a drug rehab clinic for young people that Teatr Kana has been working with. The kids are all at the facility of their own free will and were mainly males in their late teens or early twenties. While we were there, they were rehearsing for their performance on Saturday evening for the Theater Festival. The director of the facility was a jazz musician who played the tenor sax. He had set up a recording studio and encouraged the kids to explore Rap music. The bit that we heard while we were at the facility was impressive. A local DJ, DJ Twister, had put together some beats for the Monar kid to rap over. One track I really liked had a sample from Goblin’s Suspiria soundtrack. Asia related that the rapping was pretty deep and had some clever rhymes (i.e. You are more twisted than Sanscrit.) We took a very awkward group photo with the kids. They did not see any reason to take a photo with a strange group of Americans who had descended on their home and poked their noses into everything.

Our cheery group loaded in the van for the trip to Monar. There were quite a few people on the roadside selling jars of freshly picked blueberries that they had gathered in the surrounding forest.

Monar, a drug treatment center for young adults used music and theater as a way to reach the young people who had come.
After we finished our meeting, Joanna decided it would be fun to head the extra little bit further and visit the Baltic Sea. We made an extra little detour to wind up at a lighthouse, which made Wojciech extremely excited. We took a bit of time to climb up the couple hundred stairs to the top and had a good look around the little port and it’s coal-processing facilities. We then headed to a nearby beach to spend a little time exploring the seashore.

The lighthouse we made a special trip for Wojciech to see.

On the shore of the Baltic. Wojciech collecting shells. Steven, Asia and Alicia a little off kilter on a dilapidated bench.
Even though Joanna had left some messages with Teatr Kana to let Margaret know we would be later than planned, she did not get them and was quite livid when we finally showed up a couple of hours behind schedule. We had a delicious stew made with ground soy. After supper, we headed over to the Zamek again to see Due Mondi Theater’s “Fiesta.” At first I was not that impressed, and filmed intermittently. Not too long into the performance, the group proceeded to leave the courtyard and slowly circumnavigate the castle before returning to the courtyard for their final scene.

Due Mondi Theater's "Fiesta."
Took in a bit of Paul Brody and Sadawi playing klezmer music in the small yard of the Zamek.

Enjoyed a bit of Żywiec with Joanna while taking in Paul Brody and Sadawi playing klezmer.
Had some late night soup at Teatr Kana before heading back to the hotel.
