Finally we had something completely new, a day with no programming. Had a quick breakfast and headed over to the bus stop. Got the bus over to Stary Miasto where we split into smaller groups. Wojciech, Joanna and Kathleen went to the post office to retrieve the boxes that had been sent from Poznań and Szczecin. The rest of us made our way toward Internet cafes and coffee. I plunked down in the Internet café to check my email and get my blog updated. Asia came in a bit later to inform me that a nearby coffee shop had free wireless. I wrapped up my business and headed over. Asia got a haircut while Laura, Alicia, Koby, Isabel and I waited at he coffee shop. Laura and Koby used my laptop to check their email.
We eventually regrouped and Laura, Koby, Alicia, Asia and I headed out look around near the Palace of Culture, Stalin’s gift to Warszawa. The trip turned into a shopping expedition, although only Alicia ended up buying anything.

The main thrust of the shopping expedition was jewelry.

Seen around Warszawa. Some interesting graffiti. Some older ladies in uniform winding the liquor store. One of the many decorated cows in the city.

The Palace of Culture, Stalin’s gift to Warszawa. Asia and Laura enjoying a giant ice cream.
We eventually ended up back at the restaurant we had dinner at the previous night. They were packed this evening, which we all thought was strange for a Monday night. It turned out that Mondays had been slow until they started running specials on beer. Max, another of Sheila’s friends, who hailed from Frankfurt, joined Sheila and Isabel. They decided to stay and have dinner at the same restaurant. The rest of us headed over to Pizza UFO where we were joined by Margaret and Joanna’s cousins. Margaret’s cousin Karol was to give us a tour of the Warszawa uprising museum on the 20th. Joanna’s cousin was the editor for an English language monthly magazine.

Our group including Joanna's cousin on the left and Margaret's cousin Karol down in front.
After our evening meal we headed over to Le Madame, an unconventional club/performance space. We were right on time to see Mortal Kombajn, a piece in the new brutalist vein. I spent a good part of the time poking around in the empty downstairs rooms taking pictures. After the piece Wojciech had a clash with Margaret as he set about commandeering most of the bar to orchestrate us meeting with the director and cast of the play. The meeting went well and lasted nearly two hours. Afterwards Asia, Alicia, Laura and I stayed on for a bit nursing Apple Pies and listening to the DJs play a very eclectic mix. I recognized some Ninja Tune artists as well as some video game music. We got cabs home around 1am.

Le Madame. The cast of Mortal Kombajn after their performance and during our time with them. Down into the basement were another dance floor, lounge area and a bar.
