Toruń

Gathered up all my stuff and drug it downstairs for our 9:30am departure to Wojciech and Joanna’s apartment. Margaret bid us goodbye before we got out the door. She was headed off to meet with a textile firm in another city. We dropped our stuff and headed over to Joanna’s favorite coffee place, Coffee Green. I had a delicious rooibos tea that had some vanilla and a couple of other things in it along with a nice sandwich. The last bits of the group began to disperse. Kathleen went first, followed by Wojciech, Joanna and Koby. Asia and I bid Max farewell and headed over to the Warszawa Centralna (the central train station.)

At Coffee Green for the last meal before our group dissolved.

We had decided to take an overnight trip to Toruń to get away from Warszawa and have a change of pace. We got our tickets and picked up my ticket to Berlin. We had a little bit of time before our 1:15pm departure, so we went in search of some snacks. We got some pączki and headed back to catch our train. The four-hour trip was quite nice. It felt so good to be on our own. Most of the time was spent playing DJ for each other with our iPods. Asia was hooked into my iPod, which I controlled and I into hers. It was quite fun.

From Warszawa station to Toruń station in a short four hours.

The train got into Toruń a little after 4pm. We opted to hike into town despite ominous looking clouds. It was a nice walk that included a long bridge over the Vistula River. Had a very short walk through town. Passed the house Nikolai Copernicus may or may not have been born in. The hotel was not quite a quaint as the Lonely P made it out to be, but it was clean and would suffice. We lounged around for a bit before heading out for something to eat. It had started to rain while we were inside. We had both noticed a place that advertised Mexican food when we came through town. Asia was anxious to try it, so we headed for the Harley Bar. It was a strange place with southwest décor and really bad 80s pop music playing. I was about ready to leave when I saw a big American flag hanging on a wall, but the bar tender convinced us that the burritos would be to our liking. He was quite entertaining so we decided to stay. We nursed some Żywiec while we waited for our food. The burritos were different but good. Don’t know if I could ever get used to ketchup spiked with Tabasco trying to pass for salsa. Another round of Żywiec took us another hour or so to get through.

On the bridge over the Wisła headed toward Toruń.

It was still raining a bit when we came out of the restaurant. We decided to hike around and see a bit of the city and try to find some of the gingerbread that the town was noted for. We got some other desert and finally tracked down the gingerbread. It was a very lightweight affair covered in frosting, not what I was expecting at all. I was feeling a bit hungry still so we stopped by a kebab stand and ordered a veggie kebab. It turned out not to be near as exciting as a falafel. Finally headed back to the hotel around 11pm.

Out in the rain with Asia. A little late-night veggie kebab and piernik, the local gingerbread.
