Somehow Laura’s mother had gotten in contact with Joanna and let her know that Laura’s birthday was on this day. We had a little spread put out in here honor, which included a couple of nice floral arrangements and a huge stack of pączki with candles in them. Birthday singing was undertaken in English, Polish and French-Canadian as well as Sheila channeling Stevie Wonder for a soulful rendition.

A birthday celebration for Laura, pączki and flowers.
Our celebration ran a little long and made us late for our walking tour of the city. We crammed as much as we could into an hour and a half. Looked at several of the cathedrals we had walked by on the first morning in the city with Joanna. Walked passed Most Tumski, a famous pedestrian bridge which had been saved in the 1997 floods by a bunch of punks who helped sandbag some of the public structures that were in danger.

We continued winding our way toward the rynek for our noon session at the Grotowski center. Bruno, the head archivist at the center, showed us a number of films both of Grotowski’s work and about his workshop in later years. We had a short meal break in the middle and I finally got a chance to dine at Wega, the veggie restaurant right next door. Had some delicious samosas and a soy cutlet. More films at the Grotcenter followed by a tour of the theater space and a peek at the archives. Bruno was extremely animated throughout the talks and it was clear that he really enjoyed his work.

Headed over to the mall with Asia to get some training clothes for the next workshop session and some tape for the blistered feet in the group. I felt much, much better about the second session than the first one. This session continued with similar movement exercises. Ended up with more blisters on the toes on my left foot and one in the center of the ball on my right. Glad to have the tape to keep the existing blisters from popping and tearing away.
After the workshop, we headed over to a nearby outdoor restaurant. The restaurant itself was in a separate location from the tables. This and a neophyte waitress made for another strange meal. Split a veggie pizza with Asia. Most of our group ducked out early. Laura, Koby, Asia and I stayed on for another round of drinks. Mark stayed on with us after the other Hand2Mouth folks left.
