Up at 10:30. Had a bit of fruit for breakfast and worked on the computer for a an hour. Michael came upstairs to to where I was working and started chatting. We headed down to the Kumquat to get our online fix and to get some juice in my computer. Got the blog updated and put in some more time on a short video piece for Grover Dale.
Joined Michael, Yeşim, her friend Eda and her two business partners for lunch at Neşe, a little eatery around the corner from the Kumquat. One of the business partners had spent some time on the East Coast of the US and he was able to match wits with Michael about any number of Amerocentric topics. I had beans and rice and a salad. Headed back over to the Kumquat to find all of our usual spots occupied. Found a seat in the corner with power. fALk and Willow showed up an hour or so later. This angered Michael a great deal, as fALk had indicated he would follow us after about 20 minutes when we left in the morning. We all did our own thing, ignoring the others. I grabbed some video stills from some of the theater performances in Poznań for Steven.
Around 20:00, Yeşim came over and invited me to go to dinner with a group of folks. Michael and I headed back to the house to get a little bit better dressed. Michael had wanted to make a point about communicating to fALk and Willow, so we left quietly and then just missed them when they came back to the house. Headed back down to the Kumquat to meet with Yeşim and one of her girl friends, Fulya. All of them were talking about going out for "a toast." I took this to mean they had something to celebrate and were going to have a special drink somewhere before we went to dinner. Was a bit surprised when we ended up at a little sandwich shop around the corner. I had a plate of fries for dinner, while the others had sandwiches with what looked like julienne sliced fried bologna. Jumped in a taxi and headed over to Beyoğlu.
As we got close to İstiklal Cad, traffic ground to a halt so we jumped out and continued on foot. The pedestrian thoroughfare was packed, but Michael said that it was still really light compared to when all of the summer vacationers were back in town. We wandered passed Arhan's house before winding up at the building that was host to Nu Teras, a rooftop bar. I was glad I had dressed up a little, as the bouncers at the door would probably have turned me away. We got settled in a booth with a breathtaking view over Golden Horn. We chatted and nursed a round of drinks for nearly two hours. After midnight, the crowd started to shift from the folks that were there for dinner to the bar and dancing crowd. Michael pointed out the first place he had lived in Istanbul, a top floor apartment further down the hill, overlooking the Golden Horn. We eventually made our way to the dance floor and started cutting loose. I started to have an allergic to something I had eaten earlier in the evening. I suspected some of the nuts we had with our drinks might have done it, but I could not be certain. Fortunately it was fairly mild and did not keep me from dancing. Finally headed back just before 03:00.
