Up at 11:00. Showered and worked on the computer a bit before heading down to drop my laundry off to be washed. Hiked along the waterfront and decided to go and get some soy milk at the MacroCenter. It was a gorgeous Fall afternoon, so the walk was very pleasant. Got my soy milk and cleaned out the supply of hummus from their deli. Grabbed some muesli from the market up the street and headed to the house. By the time I got back, Michael was stirring.
Headed down to get some food at Neşe. Stopped at Kumquat to check in with Yeşim. She and Serkan were conversing in the front. Chatted for a bit before Michael and Yeşim went up to her office. Serkan and I headed over to Neşe. Had a nice conversation with Serkan. I was under the impression that Serkan was involved in literary pursuits, but prior to his interest in literature and philosophy he trained as a chemical engineer. Despite efforts to re-invent himself with a literary career, he was working as a project coordinator at an engineering firm. Their current project was a large oil extraction complex. The complex had three separate sections to process the extracted material and separate out water and natural gas that are mixed with the oil. The natural gas was used to power the complex and the water was injected back into the ground.
At Kumquat with Yeşim, Michael and Serkan. The new salad on offer.
Michael joined us a while later. He and Serkan stayed in the area while I headed back to the house. Michael arrived at the house around 19:00 with Burçu in tow. She was having a great deal of trouble getting Grid installed on her Toshiba laptop. The installer would go through all of the motions of installing, but only an empty folder would be created. I figured it must be a permissions issue and ran the installer again, pointed at the desktop for her account. It installed fine. Also hooked her up with OpenTZT, an open source VJ application. She hung out for a bit while we got ourselves gathered for our show at Indigo.
The staff at Neşe, slack-jawed in front of the television.
Headed over to Indigo at 20:30. Got set up quickly and headed across the alleyway to Café Cultina. Had some spicy Thai noodles. Headed back inside to get going with our work. Batu opened with a nice set of well mixed tunes. Michael had found some footage of strange 3D plants with lots of eyes mapped into natural environments. We applied some filtering to them and worked the series for the next two hours, intercut toward the end with other botanical footage. Asaf, another of our students came by to see what we were doing. He was in the booth very briefly.
Part of our setup for the evening, Batu on the wheels of steel with our electrified botanical footage in the background.
Haktan O'Nal, a German born Turk who had lived in Los Angeles for a number of years, came on at 02:00. He did an amazingly energetic set that went on until 05:30. Michael had some bad files that kept crashing Grid Pro, so it was a little tense during the middle of our set. Got compliments from Cihan about our work for the night. He also had a number of other folks come and compliment him about our visuals.
Haktan O'Nal hamming it up for the camera.
Got back into Ortaköy after 06:00. Our usual tost place had stopped serving, so we headed over to Şino. Had a delicious tost and tea. Got back to the house at 06:30 and crashed at 07:00.
