Wrestled with the Internet connection for a bit before deciding that my time would be better spent elsewhere. Headed down to the Kumquat to see if the connection there was any better. Found that it was and settled in to take some of my Apple Certified trainer tests. The codes I had been given for the the DVD Studio Pro and Motion trainer exams did not work. I was able to get into the Motion and Final Cut Pro end user exams. I opted for the Final Cut Pro exam, as I was not as studied up on Motion as I would have liked to have been.
The test had me a little on edge at first, but that quickly passed and I managed to breeze through the two hour exam with half an hour to spare. Finished up with a 92.5% score. Spent another hour at the Kumquat downloading installers for Miller Puckette's PD, an open source visual programming environment along the lines of his earlier MAX/MSP.
Went back to the house to get everything gathered up for the workshop and then back down to Neşe for dinner. Traffic was particularly bad on this particular evening, so the students trickled in slowly. Pascal called to say he would be late. We started by watching interviews with Addictive TV, The Light Surgeons, pfadfinderei and jin on the Design Flux #2 DVD that I had picked up Magma in London.
Pascal arrived just as the last interview was finishing. He launched into his introduction of MAX/MSP/Jitter. After a quick tour of the MAX interface he dove into the jit.qt.movie object and talked at length about matrixes, video and the finer points of MAX help files. The class seemed to follow along well and there were a good number of thoughtful questions. After an hour we took a break. I rebooted my computer so that we could show off the plugins we had been making for Grid Pro. The discussion finished off with a brief tour of 3L, the 3D VJ application that Pascal, Michael and I had been developing over the preceding month.
Pascal introducing MAX/MSP/Jitter to the class.
Michael steered the conversation back toward settling on a name for the group. No resolution was reached. The end of the session degenerated into small clusters of discussion. Finished up a bit early and broke down our gear. Headed over to a nearby café with Michael, Yeşim and Pascal for a beer. We were done by 23:30, hopefully early enough for Pascal to catch his bus back home. I headed back to the house to see if I could find out why some of the students were having trouble loading files into OpenTZT. The program seems to be a little picky about what format the files are in. It liked my Cinepak AVI, PhotoJPEG QuickTime, Animation QuickTime, but not MotionJPEG QuickTime, XVID AVI nor the PICT files that Elvan was trying to feed it.
