Maine Workshop

Spent an intense week in Downeast Maine with Duncan Laurie. We put the quiet and solitude of the area to good use as we focused on reviving Duncan’s interest in sonification of small voltages present in plants and certain rocks.
The IBVA system was run through it’s paces and spewed forth copious amounts of MIDI data for processing in Ableton Live. A custom tube amplifier and single-driver speaker setup designed by Henry Platt brought the sounds to life with extreme fidelity.
The weeks efforts culminated in an inspired hour-long recording of a large granite block that Duncan had brought up to Maine from an ancestral home on Jamestown Island. The rock was located just at the edge of the broadcast range of the IBVA. Some speculation has ensued about the impact of emanations from the VLF array across the bay at Cutler Naval Base.
